Fascinated by the potential of altering perception through simple cues we have explored this idea through the In-Motion Series.

Altering perception
Throughout the In-Motion Series we have explored perception through the subtle distorting of the profiles of our subjects. By blurring the figures along an imagined horizontal axis we give the still forms a sense of movement and instability. What were once images locked in time, they now have a sense of life and potential.
"The figures appear to shimmer and move in and out of focus."
With the distortion, there is an ethereal and almost otherworldly nature to the figures that adds an element of mystery to the subjects. We are not allowed a detailed reading of them. Instead we are given only fleeting glimpses of who they are and what they might be.

Interaction
The viewers eyes are encouraged to read the images continuously left to right and back creating movement that is only implied in the portraits themselves. The closer we come to the panels the more distorted and exaggerated the horizontal motion becomes until the subjects are no longer recognisable. Viewed from a distance the faces and profiles begin to reform creating a dynamic interaction with the viewer as they approach the pieces and move in the space.
"The subjects in the images interact with the viewer by simply existing."

Depth in reduction
The distorted faces and profiles are reduced to a monotone palate to free the viewer of extraneous detail and allow for an almost haptic connection to the forms. The subjects are set against an ink black background focusing the eye to the figures as well as creating depth and adding to the sense of movement through the art as if the viewer could reach into an infinite abyss beyond the subject.
