Blurring the line

Updated: Sep 26, 2024

Exploring the play of light on media, we have produced a series of wall art intended to blur the lines between interpretation, painting and sculpture.

Topology Series I, II, III - Wall Art - for Brainy & Footsy

Wall Art

Design Outcome: Textured Media Triptych

Light vs shadow

Exploring the play of light across a two-dimensional surface was the basis for this series of works for Brainy & Footsy. Utilising a textured media application, the individual variations in surface capture the light and distort the shadows across the canvases. The depth of shadow and the extent of light varies throughout the day and is dependent on the works context adding further variation and individuality to the pieces.

"Shadow and light are two sides of the same coin."

While the media is applied with minimal thickness the extensive depth within the works is achieved through the natural exaggeration of shadow and its contrast to light. This relationship varies to a greater or lesser extent depending on the context of the installed works.

A narrative

The panels can be read as a whole across the series with the variations in textures and application techniques flowing continuously across the canvases. This arrangement and its variations can be interpreted by the viewer freely. From a tide flowing across a beach or vast mountain ranges or simply an appreciation of the physical nature of the surface and its affects on light, the interpretation is deliberately open.

"The works blur the line between painting and sculpture."

The textured surface is intended to invite investigation and encourage interaction with the works. As much akin to a sculptural object as it is a painting.

At home in isolation

The pieces are intended to be able to exist in isolation as well as a triptych. With all design elements present in each canvas, the textures and variations remain balanced and contained as standalone objects.
