A play of Light and Shadow

Updated: Sep 26

Collaborating with Brainy & Footsy we have created a range of wall art prints exploring the interplay of light and shadow in architecture.

Shadowscape I, II, III + IV - Wall Art - for Brainy & Footsy

Wall Art

Design Outcome: Wall Art Prints

Exploration of depth

We created the Shadowscape series as an exploration of light and shadow in architectural settings. Inspired by the geometric massing synonymous with Mediterranean or northern African architecture and the way light plays on these forms we created a series of imagined city spaces.

"The negative space in and around the form is an intrinsic and an essential part of the narrative."

Openings appear as dark interiors with the heavy contrast of light and dark creating a sense of enclosure within. This empathises the vastness of the exterior space beyond our view.

Human scale

The images were created from the perspective of human scale. We only ever experience a snapshot of a larger city that exists beyond our viewpoint. This deliberate limit of view brings the human experience closer and more intimate. The scale of the buildings around are larger than us and provide a sense of monumentality.

"We perceive the world around us through our bodies and their position in it."

Light as colour

The colour palette utilised in these images are selected to further extend the feel expressed in the subject matter. The reds and pinks of Shadowscape I, II and III are intended to invoke a hot late afternoon with the sun low in the sky creating deep shadow and contrast. Shadowscape IV with its cooler tones is reminiscent of a moonlit night.
