Exploring the boundaries of what homewares can be, we've created a series of stone fragments designed to be a surprising vessel for produce.

Totem - Marble Produce Vessel (Decor)

Product Design

Design Outcome: Marble Produce Vessel

An assembly of function

As part of our ongoing research and examination of homeware design, we have explored reducing the humble fruit bowl to a series of fragments providing a loosely defined boundary for containing produce. The nature of the individual eight fragments allows for infinite arrangements and compositions making the Totem series a continuously dynamic experience.

"Beauty in design comes from reducing an object to its most essential elements."

The eight fragments are arranged in a totem format for storage or as a design object in-itself while the individual fragments can be utilised one-by-one as required with the remaining totem evolving in form in response.

Weight and materiality

The fragments are proportioned to create a varying undulating surface to simply contain the produce to an area. The fragments can be moved and adjusted as required to suit and provide full view and air flow around the produce.

"Quality is experienced through our sensory explorations of an object and its materiality and mass."

The fragments are crafted from a single piece of bespoke marble. The stone provides weight to the objects and allows the produce to be contained. The aesthetic nature of the marble finish elevates the fragments and produce to exist as sculptural elements independent of their function.

A family of objects

The geometric nature of the fragments and their materiality allows for further exploration of their use. Larger fragments can be used as bookends or to contain other items. Smaller fragments can become paper weights or decorative objects. The sculptural nature of the fragments allows them to be interpreted at will by the user.
