Updated: Oct 17, 2024

Tasked with reinventing the venue as a Piano Bar we, in partnership with Moda Design Group, created a cool and lush environment for late night drinks and music.

A nod to an era

Opening the first Piano Bar in Melbourne, our client wanted to capture the essence of the speakeasy era. Working with the existing building fabric we inserted interventions into the space that echoed the nostalgic mood of the time.

"The space was designed to be a celebration of music and enjoying it with friends."

Highlighting the sense of drama and intimacy, a bar table is wrapped around the piano bringing people to the centre of activity and allowing for the interaction and involvement of patrons.

Sense of the illicit

With the bar located at the end of an alley and on a first floor of a former factory the bar lent itself to the idea of a hidden space. Like a secret, further playing on the ideas of the speakeasy.

"The idea of discovering a hidden gem is synonymous with Melbourne nightlife culture."

This hidden nature was further explored in the use of materials and closing the space in. Heavy red velvet curtains cover the windows focusing the environment on the heart of the space and are further enhanced in the tuck and roll leather linings to the bar and piano surround. Details of brass and dark wood continue to add an aesthetic synonymous with vaudeville or cabaret.

Art Nouveau and Arte povera

Framed posters adorn surfaces and walls are painted with bespoke murals reminiscent of the Art Nouveau era adding a veneer of class to the existing exposed brick. This embellishment over the existing found conditions of the space is designed to play on the idea of a transient and illicit space that is ephemeral.
